Laurie Walsh
 
Professor Laurie Walsh holds a personal chair as Professor of Dental Science at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry, and he recently completed a 10 year term as the dean of dentistry. He trained at UQ and then at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University, completing a PhD and a higher doctorate in oral pathology. Laurence is a specialist in special needs dentistry and maintains a part-time specialist private practice in Brisbane. He has worked for over 40 years in small office and large hospital settings in special needs and has published widely on preventive dentistry, clinical microbiology, dental caries in children, and lifestyle - oral health- general health interactions. His published work has attracted over 6500 citations in the medical and dental literature.

Dental pain has multiple causes and there are many traps for the unwary. This workshop looks at the patterns of dental pain as seen from the perspective of the general medical practitioner, what story the pain is telling and the types of situations where an urgent dental referral is indicated.

Issues around the appropriateness of antibiotics for common dental problems will also be examined.

The workshop explores what bacteria from the oral cavity can do when they leave the confines of the mouth in search of alternative living arrangements. It will explore how the mouth is a major reservoir for pathogens which infect the respiratory and GI tracts, and the situations where seeding of pathogens and their products into the circulation leads to pathology at distant sites.

The mouth is the watershed for both the skin and the GIT, and not surprisingly oral health exerts important impacts on general health, some of which have only been identified in the past 20 years and are yet to reach wide penetration into health care practices. This lecture will highlight major interactions and give examples of dental problems which are indicators of systemic disturbances, and where there are 2-way interactions between oral health and general health.
