Jan Sinclair
 
Jan has been in Paediatric practice in Auckland since 1997. She is part of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology service at Starship Children’s Hospital. The service provides care for children with allergies, particularly severe allergies and anaphylaxis, along with children with immunodeficiency disorders.

In 2006 Jan helped establish an Allergy Special Interest Group within the NZ Paediatric Society, bringing together paediatricians from around NZ with an interest in paediatric allergy. In 2013 the group published a consensus on diagnosis and management of IgE food allergy in NZ children. Jan is currently the NZ representative on the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, and sits on the Paediatric and Immunodeficiency subcommittees.

Recurrent infections can be a normal part of early childhood. They may also be the first signs of an underlying immune deficiency, with early diagnosis of immune deficiency essential to prevent long term complications. Red flags for possible immune deficiency will be discussed, along with an approach to recurrent childhood infection in primary care.

Food allergy is an increasingly common problem affecting children. Key management issues include accurate diagnosis, appropriate avoidance strategies, availability of action plans, and follow up in case of resolution. These will be considered with respect to the NZ consensus statement.
