David Pendergrast trained in Medicine at Auckland School of Medicine and in Ophthalmology in Auckland and Bristol, UK. He has sub-specialty expertise in refractive surgery, corneal surgery, anterior segment surgery and external eye disease. He is a member of the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the New Zealand Society of Contact Lens Practitioners.

David is the Clinical Director of the New Zealand National Eye Bank and is Chairman of the Auckland Regional Ophthalmic Surgeons Committee. He is a part time consultant ophthalmologist at Greenlane Clinical Centre and a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, University of Auckland.

An ophthalmic emergency may be defined a "any clinical problem that requires immediate identification and management to preserve life or sight."

The presentation will discuss the clinical signs and initial management of emergent ocular conditions including physical and chemical trauma , causes of sudden visual loss, and systemic conditions requiring emergency management in which the presenting symptoms and signs are ophthalmic.
