Self Harm in Primary care
Concurrent Workshop
Sunday, 15 June 2014 Start 8:30am Duration: 55mins Room 2
Start 9:35am Duration: 55mins Room 2
Self-harm is among the most distressing behaviours people engage in. Recent New Zealand survey data suggest that self-harm may exceed 25% in some groups and that it is deceptively common in the general population. Instances of self-harm may be presented (or detected) in primary care settings. In addition to being co-morbid with psychotic illnesses, depression/anxiety, and eating disorders, self-harm per se appears to be increasing in modern life and presents a serious professional challenge in primary care.

For their part, self-harming patients are often ashamed and confused and, in many instances don’t disclose their behaviour openly. More to the point, many GPs have little formal training in managing this group and frequently co-morbid psychological diagnoses present ongoing challenges to best clinical practice and patient recovery.

Through their privileged position in healthcare systems and patients’ lives, GP’s are in an ideal position to recognise self-harm and provide appropriate support and referral. Risk factors and the identification of self-harm, managing patient and practitioner responses to this distressing behavior, maintaining boundaries, dealing with issues of confidentiality and culture, and engaging effectively with specialty services will be covered in this workshop.
