Jacqui Keenan

Jacqui Keenan is a senior researcher in the Department of Surgery at the University of Otago Christchurch, where she studies gut bacteria and their role in gastrointestinal disease. Her research started with the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori and she has shown how these non-invasive bacteria deliver a DNA-damaging toxin to the stomach that potentially increases the risk of gastric cancer. Building on these findings, she has now broadened her research to include the study of toxin-producing strains of Gram negative bacteria that colonise the bowel, to better understand if toxin-mediated damage might likewise increase the risk of colorectal cancer. She is currently leading laboratory-based and clinical research projects investigating this hypothesis.
