In addition to her role as National Programme Manager for the Ministry of Health’s CVD and Diabetes programme, Karen is also the National Tobacco Target Champion. Karen is a registered physiotherapist and serves as Chair of the Physio Cardio Thorasic Special Interest Group. She holds a Master’s degree in Cardio Respiratory Health Science and brings a depth of experience both in the field and within the public sector to her role in helping reduce the effects and incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and tobacco use. Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death for New Zealanders, followed closely by cancer and stroke. The prevalence of diabetes, a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and other conditions, is also increasing. Karen sees her role as working to engage the hearts and minds of clinicians and other health professionals with the urgent need for simple, effective clinical interventions for these major causes of death and disease among New Zealanders. Karen also uses her role, and the overview of the sector it affords, to help connect others with resources, support and examples of good practice from across the sector. In this capacity, Karen works closely with the various professional bodies and networks that support the various health professionals in each health discipline. Karen and her team also work directly with each of the DHBs and PHOs around New Zealand to identify and implement practices and processes that can improve outcomes for patients and communities across New Zealand. |
