The Health Equity Debate
Medicopolitical Session
Friday, 15 August 2014 Start 12:15pm Duration: 30mins Plenary
The geography of poverty in New Zealand

The NZMA’s Policy Statement on Health Equity recognises the intimate link between poverty and health status. For the past 20 years the NZDep research project has examined the landscapes of poverty in New Zealand. This presentation will provide an update of the patterns as revealed in the 2013 Census and also identify key trends over the past 20 years. I hope that this helicopter view of New Zealand’s socioeconomic landscape will inform day-to-day clinical practice, help explain the determinants of health, and prove useful as we analyse the health and economic policies of the different parties in run-up to the general election.
