Dr Stephen Child
 
Dr Stephen Child is a Canadian-trained General Physician with a Respiratory interest who immigrated to New Zealand in late 1991. He worked in Dargaville for 2˝ years before moving to his current role as General Physician and Director of Clinical Training at Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) in 1994. Clinically, he has an interest in asthma and general internal medicine with a strong passion for medical education. 

Dr Child has given numerous talks on topics of general medicine, asthma and medical education. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles on medical workforce / medical education and heads the Clinical Education & Training Unit at ADHB. 

He was a member of the DHB National Workforce Strategy Group from 2001 – 2009 and the Minister of Health’s Medical Training Board from 2007 – 2009. He was a board member of the Northern Clinical Training Network from 2001 – 2006 and currently is a Clinical Advisor to Health Workforce New Zealand.

Dr Child is the current Chair of the Auckland Division of the New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) and is an elected member of the NZMA Board. He is also a member of the NZ Telehealth Leadership Forum and Clinical Governance group for ProCare. 

He continues twice weekly private clinics specialising in medicine / respiratory diseases and is a full consultant within the Department of General Medicine at ADHB.

Fatigue is the primary symptom presenting to GPs in up to 8% of consultations. Stephen will present a suggested approach to this symptom with memory verses, aids and possible “pearls”. He will also note the similarities in approach to elevated ESR, night sweats and fever.

Dr Child will review the current investigation and treatment guidelines surrounding venous thromboembolism including the correct usage of D - Dimer and the use of Dabigatra/ Rivaroxaban

Dr Child will review the current out patient investigations for the ambulatory patient presenting with Chest Pain including a review of the Differential diagnosis and the correct ordering of troponin and ECG testing.

Dr Child will present his personal approach to a patient presenting with "generalised fatigue" including tips on history taking, physical examination and judicious laboratory testing.
