Peter has worked in primary care for 32 years, and will assist the ENT team in teaching Basic and Advanced Surgical Skills at the workshops on Thursday. An Affiliated Provider for Skin Cancer Surgery for Southern Cross Healthcare, he directs the Skin and Vein Clinic in Whangarei, regularly operating on skin lesions. He is very experienced in photodynamic therapy as a nonsurgical option, without the need for scalpels or needles. As a foundation Fellow of the NZ Society of Cosmetic medicine ( formerly NZCAM) he is dually concerned about providing an adequate excision of selected skin lesions, as well as the cosmetic result. He is a registered laser operator, a cosmetic physician performing tumescent liposculpture, and also practices as a phlebologist - removing varicose veins with Endovenous Laser Ablation and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. Any surgical procedure, no matter how minor, exposes the patient and
the doctor to dangers. Basic safety measures in handling sharps and
use of instruments, coupled with appropriate clinical knowledge and
care, are the minimum requirement for anyone practising even the most
minor surgical procedure. This session will begin with a safety framework, introduce basic surgical instruments and discuss their selection and use for minor surgery of the skin. In a hands-on interactive session, you will learn how to select and use appropriate needles and sutures, and perform incisions and excisions mindful of skin tension (Langers) lines. You will practise knot tying and simple suturing techniques, and consider post operative wound cares. |
